Definition: "Profession" (NOUN) - a paid occupation, especially one that involves prolonged training and a formal qualification.

Author is not my profession, and it is a hobby. I am not a writer and do not call myself a writer. I enjoy writing about events, thoughts, philosophies, and experiences of life from my perception. I have always written, but I recently started sharing it. I consider writing a weakness of mine. Each post on here is one rep, as I see it. An opportunity to practice writing and communicating ideas and thoughts "publicly." 

I am a student of writing.

Artist is not my profession, it is a hobby. I do not call myself an artist and have not earned that right. I am no Marc Chagall. I studied graphic design and took hand lettering courses at SVC, School of Visual Concepts. Hand lettering and logo design is something I enjoy. It is not how I earn my living.

I am a student of art.

Martial Artist is not my profession. It is a hobby I love, having trained in all kinds of boxing, Tae Kwon Do, kickboxing, wrestling, Pancrase, jiu-jitsu, sambo, and MMA. The purpose of studying any of these is because if I were caught without a weapon, I would be difficult to kill if it went hand to hand. This is not how I earn my living.

I am a student of Martial Arts.

Having these three things I can practice almost anywhere is good. It is good to practice all three on the same day. That being said, my profession is security contractor, and though that work is not what it used to be, it is how I earn my income, and I need to be grateful for it. I used to pray to have the work I have now. It is where I spend most of my time and life. 

That is my profession.  

All these hobbies are just that until they produce an income; right now, they do not. They will remain to be just that. Until the day I transform a hobby I love into a profession. The truth isn't fun or amazing most of the time, but I would rather be fiercely honest with myself than regurgitate the most beautiful of lies to myself or my brothers.
