Romantic About the Fight

A man’s desire for freedom is not a yearning to be devoid of burdens or accountability.

It’s a longing to have the autonomy to select the burdens he carries and to be answerable for what he values, what he can physically interact with, and what he can manipulate with his mind and hands.

The type of freedom that asks him to do, act, be responsible for his freedom, and live it as a rebellion against death.

Freedom that asks nothing of you isn’t freedom; it is prison. It is what the warden asks prisoners to do: to sit in their cells and “do their time.” Do nothing and wait for it to be over. Then, you will be free.

Do not think, do not question, do ask why, do not trust your reason. The truth will be warmed up and fed to you; you eat it when they tell you to.

* Romantic - conducive to or characterized by the expression of love

Only a man romantic about life would choose to love something challenging to master, create, and believe in something beyond himself.

Don’t let the savage in you hide now; savage barbarian men loved fiercely, loved their women, loved their families, loved their swords, and loved living while killing to be able to live and love.

Pursuing a skill that takes decades to master is romantic. It is love and obsession. It is to do your work; it is to live.

It is love whether you admit it to yourself or not. Do not fear the word; fear having nothing to lean into without love.
